How to learn the Russian language? How to learn to speak Russian? How to learn to understand Russian? To do this, you need the right methodology and the right textbooks that quickly give real results.

I have been developing my own methodology of teaching Russian to foreigners for many years. I wanted the knowledge that students receive, they immediately put into practice. You have learned the word, and already immediately understand how to use it in speech. You have learned a grammatical construction or phrase, and it does not hang like a dead weight, you immediately know in what context it is correct to use it. All my courses are exclusively practical. And this is important when learning any language.

My methods

Basic principles

My methodological concept is based on two main principles that are fully implemented in all my textbooks, both for foreigners studying Russian and for Russian-speaking students studying English:

  •  communicative learning
  • account of students’ native language

Communication as a fundamental principle dominates all sides of education: the selection and nature of the material, the choice of methods and techniques of teaching, the ratio of the types of speech activities, etc. Account of the native language is implemented in my textbooks in selection of language material. the most difficult for this category of students, as well as in a certain system of its submission and processing. In the textbook “Survival Russian. Говорите правильно!” all material is translated into English: vocabulary, grammar explanations, formulation of tasks and tests. And all the dialogues, which are more than 200 in this textbook, are translated into English. To all my other textbooks are attached educational dictionaries with translation of vocabulary into English, French and German. This approach certainly facilitates the process of memorizing language material.

Peculiar properties of the method

Linguistic and cultural information

An important characteristic of my method is linguistic and cultural information about Russia represented in my textbooks (its holidays and traditions, stereotypes of communication and etiquette, etc.). It allows students to get acquainted with the realities of the country of the studied language and feel more confident and comfortable in a foreign language environment.

Development of all types of speech activit

In all my textbooks all four types of speech activity necessary for active language proficiency are purposefully practiced: speaking, reading, writing, listening comprehension. Why is this necessary? Having a great experience of practical work, I often face the fact that students, even possessing a good lexical and grammatical base, cant not only, as they say, “get into conversation“, but cant read and write Russian correctly either. And they understand Russian speech by ear very poorly. And sometimes the student reads well Russian, but can’t maintain dialogues on basic topics. Or speaks Russian fluently, but writes with gross errors.

Given all this, I offer in my textbooks such material that allows you to develop all four types of speech activity. To achieve this goal, several tasks are set:

  • to teach students to easily communicate in Russian, to maintain a conversation on the most relevant everyday topics;

  • to teach how to write in Russian correctly. After all, it is scientifically proven that the process of memorizing and assimilation of the material is more effective and better when performing written tasks;

  • to learn to read Russian: to understand quickly what you read, to navigate in the read text easily, to be able to answer questions to it;

  • to teach students to understand Russian speech by ear. Listening (listening and listening comprehension) is the most difficult aspect in learning any language. But with proper work on this type of speech activity, the results also become obvious. A CD is included to complete this task.

Numerous tasks for all types of speech activity are presented in each of my textbooks.

Special work on both dialogue and monologue speech

A distinctive feature of my methods is a special, consistently done work on both dialogue and monologue speech of students. Often, having the ability to engage in elementary dialogues, responding to the cues of the interlocutor, the person cannot build his own monologue saying: to tell about himself, his family, his work, his hobbies, etc. So I paid great attention to forming these skills: many exercises to perform this task are provided. All dialogues and texts in textbooks are written on the basis of spoken language. It again allows to teach students to use the language as a means of communication.

The opportunity to learn the language yourself

One of the features of my methods is the fact that using my textbooks you can learn the language yourself. All the material is presented in the most simple and accessible way, from simple to complex. To all tasks and tests are given the keys. And vocabulary, exercises, dialogues and texts are accompanied by audio recording. This also certainly facilitates the process of learning the language.

Methodical recommendations

Each textbook describes in detail the order of work with it. It indicates how to perform a particular task, i.e. clear guidelines are given. Therefore, my textbooks are also actively used by novice teachers, including those without special education, who have a great need in textbooks that facilitate their work. And all my textbooks contain the methodically verified and proven over the years of practical work system of submission, development and consolidation of language material.
